Living in an on the go society, we sometimes find ourselves out and about when we need to make a code change or update a website. Until the Apple iPad came out we were forced to lug around a laptop only to have to worry about finding a wifi network to connect to, without having to carry around even more adapters for a cell phone connection, and then finally get around to making our necessary changes. Well all that has changed thanks to a great app called Gusto for the iPad. We always have our iPhones and iPads with us but until now we had no efficient way coding. So with all that said we would like to introduce our latest app find: Gusto.
Gusto markets itself as “Web Development on the iPad” and we must say that’s exactly what it is. From it’s great home layout with each site having their own screenshot and title, to the built in FTP ability, we must say this app is the most promising of all the web development apps out there. What makes this app so remarkable is a couple of features. This app works in either landscape or portrait mode. Once you open the app it takes you to your home screen which consists of a bunch of thumbnail screenshots of the sites you have added. This is very similar to Coda but in our opinion with better execution and design.

Once at your home screen you simply click on the site you want and it takes you to your files for that project. The great thing about Gusto is you can download the files directly to your iPad and work off of them locally, without even having to connect to the internet. This is especially great if you are working over Edge network or are in a dead zone. The process is fairly simple and currently only supports FTP mode (with SFTP support coming soon after approval).

The interaction to download the files to the iPad is extremely easy. You are presented with two window views with the left hand side being your local files and the right hand side being the server. You can select individual files or you can click the gear in the right hand corner and click select all or deselect all. Small functions like this make this program a set above the rest.

Once you download all the files you want, editing them is as simple as any desktop application. You click on the file you want and select Open and it will display the code on the right side. You can have multiple files open with a new tab being generated with that file name as the tab name. This is extremely helpful when you need to make multiple changes across multiple files.

Not that the attention to detail in this app hasn’t already been shown but when you are editing a file you are presented a special bar above the keyboard with typical shortcuts found when having to code websites. While a few have been left off, this bar helps speed up the process immensely.

With Gusto on our iPads, we are never without the ability to edit websites. While this app is far from perfect, the attention to detail, the overall design and feel, makes this a great everyday app. We are sure that small changes like the shortcut bar, as well as Syntax Highlighting (which from what we here at DIG know about app development know this is an Apple issue with the way they are handling text), SFTP (once it gets approval) will come in future releases of this great app. To get your copy of Gusto for $6.99 please click the following link to be taken directly to the app store.

Ever wonder if you could use Facebook chat without having to stay logged into Facebook through a web browser? Use Facebook Chat to talk to people without having to constantly check your web browser by using any Jabber supported client (like IM+ on the iPhone or Android phone). In this tutorial we are going to explain how we always appear online and ready to talk to any client on Facebook Chat through the use of Apple iChat and Adium.
Adium Chat Setup
Step 1: Open up Adium and if you’ve already used it before go to Adium -> Preferences in the top left hand corner next to the Apple logo.
Step 2: Click on Accounts and click the plus (+) sign in the left hand corner.

Step 3: From the Account Type drop down select Facebook.

Step 4: In the email field input your email address associated to your Facebook account & in the password field put in your Facebook password.

Step 5: Click OK and Adium is now setup to use Facebook Chat (it should go online). Click Available in the drop down in the Contacts window and you are all done. Pretty easy to use huh? You can now use Adium without having to have a web browser logged into Facebook and chat with all of your friends/clients.

Apple iChat
Step 1: Open up iChat and if you’ve already used it before go to iChat -> Preferences in the top left hand corner next to the Apple logo.
Step 2: Click on Accounts and click the plus (+) sign in the left hand corner.

Step 3: From the Account Type drop down select Jabber. For the Account name put in your screen name (the screen name you created in Facebook) followed by @chat.faceboook.com and the corresponding password for Facebook in the password field.

Step 4: Click the Server Options Arrow to display server options. In the Server field put chat.facebook.com & for the port field put in 5222. Make sure Use SSL is unchecked.

Step 5: Click Done and iChat is now setup to use Facebook Chat. Click Available in the drop down in the Jabber List window and you are all done. Pretty easy to use huh? You can now use iChat without having to have a web browser logged into Facebook and chat with all of your friends/clients.

The D.I.G. team is proud to announce one of their latest creations – a brochure style website for Hogan•Taylor•Miller. We have had a great time working with such great people and we are proud of the outcome. The goal was to create something clean and simple, to encompass all of the many services that Hogan•Taylor•Miller offers, and maintain the professionalism that this company offers. While using a more traditional navigation layout we managed to squeeze in some new web techniques – such as the custom scroller found on the “Meet HTM” page & the HTML 5 video players on the Wealth Management Services section. We throughly enjoyed working with them and cannot wait to see what is next in the way of SEO & Pay Per Click campaigns. In case you haven’t heard of Hogan•Taylor•Miller read below for a little bit about them. To visit their site click here.

The great folks at Grand Strand Bicycles in Murrells Inlet recently moved into a nicer and bigger home. You can now find them at 410-B6 Hwy 17 Bypass Murrells Inlet, SC 29576 (that’s the Piggly Wiggly Shopping Plaza). They had us create some lawn signs to place at the old location to let everyone know that they are still here.
They also carry Trek Bicycles now! We added the Trek Logo to their truck and also added the website and phone number to the back window.
So if your shopping for a new bike or you’re visiting the area and need to rent, get yourself over the Grand Strand Bicycles now and let the great people there take good care of you. You’ll be glad you did!
You can check them out online at www.grandstrandbicycles.com
